My friend in Chicago called my bokashi bucket 'the apartment's new science project'

She said it looked like I was brewing trouble, not compost. That joke made me check my bran mix, and sure enough, I'd let the bag sit open for a month. Has anyone else had their ferment go funky from old bran?

Old bran is a total game changer, and not in a good way. My first batch turned into a slimy mess because the bag wasn't sealed tight. The microbes just don't work right if the bran loses its potency. You end up with a sour smell that's way worse than the normal pickle vibe. It's a hard lesson in keeping that stuff fresh.

Yeah, and that sour smell is a dead giveaway it's gone bad, like old milk.

Honestly that sounds a bit over the top. Tbh it's just old bran, not like it's gonna kill you. Ngl I'd probably still use it and just see what happens.
