My countertop bin turned into a science experiment last week

I left my compost bin on the counter for 4 days because I forgot to empty it before a work trip. When I got back, there were fruit flies everywhere and the lid was stuck from pressure. I use a charcoal filter in the lid and thought that was enough, but I guess not. The whole kitchen smelled like a rotten banana smoothie for a day. Now I'm wondering if I should switch to a smaller bin that forces me to empty it more often. Has anyone else had this happen with a sealed bin, or am I just doing it wrong?

Three days in and mine turned into a full fruit fly rave, like they had a DJ and everything. I feel your pain, but honestly a smaller bin just means I forget it for two days instead of four.
