My compost bin lid cracked and the fruit flies moved in overnight
It happened yesterday afternoon, I think the cheap plastic just gave out from being opened and closed so much. I had to wrap the whole thing in duct tape and put it out on the balcony until I can get a new one. Anyone have a sturdy countertop bin they'd recommend that actually seals tight?

Yeah, metal with a rubber seal is the way to go for sure. I had a plastic one that warped in the summer heat and never closed right again. The rubber gasket on my metal bin makes a real difference, it actually clicks shut. You still have to clean the seal now and then so sticky stuff doesn't break it down.

Get a metal one with a rubber seal, right? The plastic ones always fail.

Honestly the plastic ones don't always fail, that's a bit too broad. I've had a plastic bin last for years in my garage with no warping. Tbh it depends more on the brand and how thick the plastic is. A cheap thin one will definitely give you problems, but a good heavy duty plastic one can be just fine. The rubber seal is the real key no matter what the bin is made of.
