My bokashi bin turned into a science experiment...

I got one of those bokashi bins last month from a friend in Portland. She said it never smells if you drain it every 3 days. Well, I forgot about it for 2 weeks and when I opened it up, this green foam had crusted all over the lid and it smelled like a gym sock soaked in pickle juice. I had to scrape it out with a spatula and dump the whole thing into my community garden bin. Has anyone else had their bokashi go totally rogue like that?

Did you check if the foam was actually mold or just bacterial overflow?

I mean that's the real question isn't it. A lot of people see any slimey buildup in their system and immediately jump to black mold panic. But bacterial overflow from condensation lines or drain pans can look like mold too, especially when it sits in the dark and dries out a bit. The only way to really know is a test kit from the hardware store, not just guessing by color. Did you actually swab it and check or were you just going by what it looked like? Cause if it's bacterial, bleach and vinegar will handle it fine, but if it's mold you gotta be more careful about containment and what you use to clean it.
