My bokashi bin reeked until a guy on Reddit told me to drain it every 3 days

Kept getting this sour rotting smell from my kitchen setup under the sink in my Austin apartment. Some dude in a composting group straight up said I was drowning my scraps by leaving the liquid sit too long. Started draining into a separate jug every 3 days like he said, and now it just smells like pickles. Has anyone else had that issue with their bokashi getting too wet?

Respectfully, the sour rotting smell was definitely from too much liquid sitting in there. Bokashi is supposed to ferment, not rot. When the liquid stays trapped it goes anaerobic in a bad way. The liquid needs to be drained regularly so the good bacteria can do their job without drowning. My bin went from smelling like garbage to just smelling like fermented pickles once I started draining it. Keeping that liquid out made a huge difference.

The smell was probably just part of the process though, not necessarily a wetness issue.
