Last week my little worm bin hit the 50 pound mark

After about 8 months of adding scraps to my worm bin under the kitchen sink, I finally weighed the compost I took out. It came to just over 50 pounds of dark, rich soil from what was mostly banana peels and coffee grounds. That number surprised me because I started this just to cut down on trash, not expecting to actually make a dent. Has anyone else been shocked by how much compost you can produce from a single apartment bin over time?

Did you see that study about how a full bin can actually make enough soil for like two houseplants a month?

Probably works out to a couple cubic feet of finished compost per month depending on what you're feeding them. I've been running a worm bin for about a year and it's surprising how fast the castings pile up when you keep conditions right. Two houseplants worth sounds about right, maybe a bit more if you're growing something that's really hungry like tomatoes in pots. The real trick is getting the moisture balance right so you don't end up with a soggy mess that doesn't break down properly.
