I used to just toss citrus peels in my countertop bin and wondered why it smelled like a bar fight

For 6 months I was dumping lemon and lime rinds straight into my compost pail thinking it was fine. Then last Tuesday I opened the lid and the smell almost knocked me over, mold was EVERYWHERE. Who else switched to freezing their citrus scraps before adding them to the bin later in the week?

Honestly, is it really that big of a deal? I've thrown citrus peels straight into my bin for years and yeah, it gets a bit funky but that's just compost doing its thing. Maybe your bin isn't ventilated right or you're just not tossing it out often enough. Freezing scraps seems extra when you could just take the bin out twice a week instead of waiting for it to turn into a biohazard.

And honestly @terrywilson, you're so right about the ventilation thing lol. I think people overcomplicate composting when really it just needs airflow and occasional stirring. Frozen scraps melt into a weird slimeball anyway so it's like... congrats, you just made moldy juice ice cubes lmao.
