Bought a $60 countertop composter that barely works

I picked up a FoodCycler FC-30 about 3 months ago thinking it would be the perfect solution for my small apartment. After 2 weeks the fan started making this grinding noise and it never fully dried the scraps, just left a wet paste. Customer service told me to run a cleaning cycle which did nothing. Anyone else have luck with a different brand in a tight space?

...and that's exactly what happened to my friend Sarah with the exact same model. She tried everything - cleaning cycles, letting it run longer, even taking it apart to see if something was stuck inside (not that I'd recommend that). Ended up returning it after a month because it just wouldn't do what it promised, you know? She switched to a Lomi and honestly it's been way better in her tiny kitchen, though it is a bit pricier. The key difference she noticed is the Lomi actually has a carbon filter that keeps the smell down, which the FoodCycler totally dropped the ball on.
