Bokashi bin saved my countertop after the fruit fly disaster
Last August I had a huge fruit fly problem that made me almost quit apartment composting. My little bucket under the sink was fine but the moment I added citrus peels, boom, gnats everywhere. A friend in Chicago told me to try a bokashi system with the bran and a spigot. I got one for $45 and after 3 weeks I noticed zero smell and zero flies. Now I layer every scrap with bran and drain the liquid every few days for my plants. Has anyone else switched from a plain bin to bokashi and seen a big difference?

Oh man, I feel this so hard. The fruit fly thing is the absolute worst, I almost gave up on composting too because of it. Citrus peels were like a dinner bell for those little monsters in my old bin. But yeah, the bokashi system really changed things for me too, the bran does something magic to keep the smell down and the bugs away. I still can't believe how easy the draining part is, and my plants love that liquid gold. It's such a relief to not dread opening the cabinet anymore, you know?
