Why does nobody talk about how sub vs dub arguments get settled by a bad TV speaker
I was at my buddy's place in Cleveland last month and we got into a whole thing about whether subs or dubs are better for a show we were watching. He kept saying the dub was fine but I noticed his TV speakers were set to some weird movie mode that muffled all the mid range, so the voices sounded flat and hard to follow. I grabbed his soundbar remote and switched it to standard, and suddenly he goes oh wow the dub actually sounds way better now. We ended up rewatching the same episode twice to compare and he totally flipped his take. Has anyone else had an argument about subs vs dubs that turned out to just be a speaker setting the whole time?
Speaker settings are the hidden third option in every subs vs dubs fight. I've watched people swear a dub was trash and then realize their TV was stuck on some "news" preset that boosts voices weird and kills the background music, so every line felt dead. Flip it to standard or stereo and suddenly the acting lands and the lip flaps don't even bug them. Same thing happens with subtitles too, someone's got their center channel cranked so loud that the dialogue drowns the effects and they blame the mix. Quick test: play one scene on standard, then movie mode, then whatever "clear voice" thing your TV has, and see if your opinion changes. Half these arguments aren't about subs or dubs at all, they're about a factory setting nobody touched.
