Update: I watched the original 'Evangelion' dub for 15 years before a friend in Austin said I was missing the point.
He made me watch a subbed episode and the director's true intent with the dialogue hit me completely different. Anyone else have a show they totally misunderstood until they saw it in another language?

I watched the original "Cowboy Bebop" dub for like a decade. I always thought it was just a cool space show with great music. Then I saw the subbed version last year and the whole mood felt sadder and more lonely. The English voices made Spike seem way more laid-back, but the Japanese performance is full of quiet regret. It totally flipped the meaning of the ending for me. I can't go back to the dub now.

That reminds me, my buddy watched the Akira dub first and thought it was just this wild action flick. Then he saw it subbed and realized half the characters are crying out in real pain the whole time, completely changed how he saw Tetsuo's arc.
