Update: I said shonen fights were just flashy noise, and a 20 minute clip from episode 8 of a show I skipped fixed that
Three weeks ago I was at my friend Dev's place in Sacramento, arguing that most shonen fights are just yelling and light shows with no real weight behind them. He pulled up episode 8 of a show I had skipped for a whole season, and the fight had maybe four lines of dialogue in 20 minutes, with the hits landing slow and heavy and the camera never cutting away to hide anything. I got quiet about two minutes in, then rewatched it twice before I left his apartment that night. It turns out I was judging the genre off clips and not off a full scene. What fight scenes made you flip on a whole style of anime you had already written off?
Rewatching it twice before you left says it all. I wrote off mecha fights as clunky and slow until I sat through a full one, now I get why the weight matters.
