That 4 AM rewatch debate on my Discord server actually fixed how I rate shows

My buddy Kai argued that 'dumb fun' anime like Food Wars deserves the same score as something deep like Monster, and after arguing for 2 hours over late night ramen, I finally get that I was rating my own taste instead of the show's goal, so how do you guys separate what you like from what's actually good?

My buddy does the same thing with restaurants. He'll trash a diner because the pancakes aren't fancy enough, but that diner isn't trying to be a five star place. It's the same with shows, you gotta ask what the thing is trying to do first. I've noticed people do this with music too, calling a pop song trash because it's not deep, when the goal is just to make you dance. Once you start grading by intent, your list gets way more honest, and you can actually enjoy stuff without guilt.
