Heard some guy at the con last weekend say My Hero Academia is just X-Men for kids who never read comics

It made me wonder if people just say stuff like that to sound smart or if they actually believe every show with superpowers is a rip-off, anyone else tired of those hot takes that miss the whole point of a series?

It's like how people call every fantasy movie a Lord of the Rings ripoff just because it has elves or something. Most hot takes are just people trying to sound clever without actually thinking about what makes a show different from whatever they're comparing it to.

The X-Men comparison falls apart fast when you look at how MHA handles hero society as a whole system, not just a metaphor for discrimination. X-Men is about mutants being hunted for being born different, while MHA is more about the pressure of living up to a hero ideal in a world where powers are the norm. Plus, Deku's whole journey is about earning a power through hard work and mentorship, not just being born with a cool mutation. People who say this probably only watched the first season and decided they had it all figured out.
