Finally beat that one boss in Evangelion 3.0 after 2 months of rewatching

I kept getting stuck on the part where Shinji hesitates with the spear and the whole Angel fight goes sideways. It took me like 8 rewatches and reading a bunch of forum threads to really get what the movie was going for. Honestly thought I'd never understand why everyone called it a mess but now I see the pattern. Still think the pacing is weird though. Has anyone else had a specific scene or episode they had to sit with for way too long before it clicked?

Yeah! Had the same thing with Eureka Seven. Took me forever to get what Renton's deal was.

lol the spear hesitation scene is rough but the real trick is noticing Unit 01's eye color changes throughout the fight
