Dubbed vs subbed at a con panel turned into a shouting match

Last month at Anime NYC, I went to a small panel about classic mecha shows and the host asked who watches dub. I raised my hand and said I prefer dub for Gundam because I can actually follow the tech talk. This guy two rows back starts yelling about how subs are the only true way and that I'm missing the director's intent. I shot back that he probably never watched the original 0079 dub where the script was so bad it added comedy. The panel moderator had to step in after like 5 minutes of us going back and forth. Honestly it was awkward but also kind of fun? I think dub vs sub debates are way more about nostalgia than quality at this point. Has anyone else gotten into a weird debate at a con that just spiraled out of control?

Three hundred people stuck in that room and nobody tried to switch topics to Macross, huh? Did the guy actually name one specific scene where the dub ruined something, or was it just all "purity" talk?
