Buddy of mine got into an older show last year, like 50 something eps, and by the end he knew every random side character's whole deal. Names, backstories, the guy who ran the ramen shop, all of it. Then he tried a new 12 ep show and said it felt like reading a summary instead of a book. Side characters barely get two lines now before the season's over.
