Appreciation post: When anime DVDs had those mini art books inside
I was digging through some old boxes last weekend and found my copy of Last Exile from 2003. It had this little 20 page booklet with character sketches and a note from the director that I completely forgot about. These days you're lucky if a bluray comes with a slipcover, let alone any extra physical stuff. Back then it felt like the norm but now I realize how much care went into those releases. Does anyone else miss when their anime purchases came with more than just the disc?

Wait, hold on - are you telling me that book I thought was a rare limited edition was actually just the DVD equivalent of a receipt? I still have my Last Exile copy too and I straight up used that booklet as a bookmark for like 4 years before I remembered what it was even for. The director's note actually made me rewatch the show just to see if I missed something obvious, turns out I just wasn't paying attention the first time. Man, those booklets really did feel special even if half of us probably treated them like scrap paper.
