A guy at the bookstore in Sacramento handed me his copy of volume 3 and it hit me harder than the show
I was killing time at a used bookstore on J Street in Sacramento last month and some older dude saw me holding the first volume of a series I'd only watched the anime of. He asked if I'd read it and I said no, and he just pulled volume 3 off the shelf and gave it to me, said the scene in chapter 41 got him through a rough winter. I read the whole thing in two nights and he was right, the manga version of that arc does way more with the side character than the anime did, like 30 extra pages of buildup that changed how I felt about the ending. I went back the next weekend hoping to thank him but the guy at the counter said he only comes in on Tuesdays. Anyone else had a random stranger put the right volume in your hands at the right time, and what was it?
Kept thinking about this after I read it. What gets me is that he didn't just hand you volume one, he skipped straight to the one that mattered, which means he stood there and made a call about what you needed before you even knew you needed it. I had a version of this at a laundromat in Portland, some woman saw my paperback and swapped it for a different book off her own pile, said the ending was better. She was right. I never saw her again either and I still think about that trade more than most books I actually bought myself. The Tuesday thing is rough though, you should just go back on a Tuesday and see. Worst case you stand around in a bookstore for a bit, which is not a bad way to spend an afternoon.
