Why does nobody talk about how bad old alarm panels smell?
I was swapping out an old Ademco panel in a house built in 1988 last week. When I cracked that lid open, the smell of dust and old solder hit me like a wall. It was like the thing had been baking for 35 years in that basement. Now with all the new wireless stuff, we don't have to deal with that gross buildup from old transformers. Has anyone else noticed how smoky some of those old panels get inside?

Cracked open an old fire alarm panel at a job once and the smell of burnt dust was enough to knock you back a step. A can of compressed air and a quick vac worked wonders before I swapped it out.

Man, I totally feel that. That burnt dust smell is something else, isn't it? I've had to crack open a few old panels in my time and it's like a punch in the face every single time. A good vac and some compressed air usually does the trick, but I always make sure I'm wearing a mask now. Learned that lesson the hard way after coughing up dust for two days.
