Update: Got into it with a homeowner in Austin over drilling a new hole for a keypad wire.

He wanted me to fish it through an existing one to save his drywall, but I said a clean new hole is better for the run and future service. Who's right on a job like that?

Did you tell him a new hole is just cleaner work in the long run?

Nah, gotta push back on that a bit, @theaward. A new hole is rarely cleaner. You're adding more cuts, more seams to seal, more chances for leaks. It's like patching a tire versus putting on a whole new sidewall. Way more work for a worse result. Fix the original hole right and it'll outlast the whole panel.

Used to always drill new holes myself. Then saw how many leaks started at those extra penetrations years later. Now I fish wires whenever possible, because a single, well-sealed hole is just more reliable over time.
