Update: A client in Phoenix told me their old system was 'fine' until a power surge fried the main panel.

It made me wonder how many of you actually push surge protectors or whole-home solutions during a quote, because I usually just mention it in passing.

Ugh, that "it was fine until" line is so common and so frustrating. I feel for that client, but it's a perfect example of why we need to be more direct. I've started showing people pictures of fried boards from local surges. It makes the risk feel real, not just an upsell. I lost a good customer years ago the same way, and now I make it a key part of the closing talk.

Yeah, showing the actual damage is a game changer. I keep a fried power supply from a nearby lightning strike on my bench now. When people see that melted mess and hear it was a $1500 repair, the $30 surge protector suddenly looks way different. It turns the whole talk from a maybe into a real choice they understand.
