Had a panel meltdown in a garage last Tuesday

Customer called me freaking out. Smoke coming from their alarm panel. Got there and found the backup battery swollen and leaking. The terminals were corroded bad. Turns out they had the panel right above a hot water heater for 5 years. Anyone else run into heat damage from bad placement?

Read a fire safety report that said panels near water heaters fail three times faster.

Used to think mounting panels near the water heater was fine since the garage only gets warm, not hot. Then I read that same report and saw the accelerated failure is from thermal cycling, not just peak heat. Went and checked my own setup and the panels were already showing microcracks along the edges after just two years. Did you move yours after reading it or just keep an eye on them?

Well you'd think water and electricity would be common sense not to mix, guess not.
