Discovered I was drilling holes in the wrong spot for 3 years
Was checking an old job's wiring diagram for an upgrade and realized the standard door magnet mount points I've been using were off by about 2 inches from the manufacturer's spec. My contacts have been fine in every install, but now I'm wondering if that's why a couple false alarms popped up over the years. Anyone else ever find a basic habit that was just wrong the whole time?

Fixed mine by checking the spec sheet before every install now.

Wait, TWO INCHES off and your contacts still worked all that time? That's wild to me, I would've bet money that kind of gap would mess up the alignment way more. And @the_jessica is right, checking the spec sheet every time sounds like the boring fix but honestly it's the one that saves your butt later. I had a similar wake up call with thermostat placement once, not as big a difference but still made me question every other habit I had. The false alarms thing makes total sense now though, even a small shift can cause the magnet to lose its sweet spot when the door settles differently.
