Vent: a chafed fuel line clamp on a 172 took me 11 hours and two parts runs
Last Tuesday a 172 came in for a routine inspection and I spotted a fuel line clamp rubbing against the firewall, so I figured it was a quick swap. It was not quick. The clamp bolt was seized, and when I finally got it loose the line had worn a shallow groove that I could not just ignore, so I had to pull the whole line out to check it properly. Then the replacement clamp in our bin was the wrong size and the shop 20 minutes away closed at 5, so I lost a full day just on back and forth. Total job came to about 11 hours across two days for what should have been a 90 minute fix. Next time I am checking the parts shelf before I even break out the tools, lesson learned the hard way. Has anyone else run into a worn fuel line hiding behind a clamp that looked fine from the outside?
