The change in engine oil testing procedures at my last base
Three years ago at the FBO in Billings we just sent oil samples off to the lab and waited two weeks for results. Now we use those little spectrometers right in the hangar and get readings in 15 minutes. It's completely changed how we catch metal particles early on the older turbines. Has anyone else's shop made that switch and seen a drop in unexpected engine pulls?

Take that new gadgetry with a grain of salt. In my experience, those handheld spectrometers are great until the calibration drifts and you start chasing ghosts in the oil. Your mileage may vary, but I'd still send a backup sample to the lab once a month just to be safe.

We send one in every ten samples to the lab, keeps us honest.
