Bought a $340 borescope off a retiring A&P and it paid for itself on my third inspection
A guy I know from the local EAA chapter was hanging up his wrenches after 38 years and selling off his tools, so I grabbed his rigid borescope for $340, which felt like a lot for a used one. Third inspection with it, I caught a small nick on a cylinder wall that I would have sworn was nothing from the outside, and the owner of the 172 agreed to pull it before it turned into a much bigger problem. He told me the shop down the road quoted him almost two grand for the same tear down, so that scope basically covered itself in one job. Still getting used to the focus ring though, the picture gets grainy when the probe is in deep. What do you all use for small diameter engine work, or am I late to this party?

340 bucks for a used scope is still 340 bucks you didn't need to spend, and a nick on a cylinder wall is exactly the kind of thing that sits there for 500 hours and never grows into anything. Half the cylinders out there have some little mark from a ring or a piece of carbon and they keep running fine. Pulling a jug "just in case" is how you turn a 340 dollar tool into a 340 dollar tool plus a top overhaul.
