PSA: Stop calling every chatbot an AI breakthrough
I sat through a vendor demo in Portland last Tuesday where they showed a basic Q&A bot that just pulls from their help docs and called it a 'revolutionary agent.' It couldn't even handle follow-up questions about shipping times, and the sales guy kept saying it 'learns' when it clearly doesn't. Am I the only one who thinks we need to separate actual AI innovation from glorified search?

That sales pitch is basically the problem, right? How did they even define "learns" when the bot clearly just searched a database? Like, did anyone at that demo ask them to show one example of it improving from a previous conversation? Because that would have been the moment to call out the whole thing. It seems like every company now just slaps the word AI on whatever script they already had running, and nobody pushes back on the actual claims. The real test is if the thing can handle a question it has never seen before and still give a useful answer, not just match keywords. So my question is, what would it take for you to actually call something a breakthrough these days?
