A senior dev told me my AI agent code was 'too clever' and I'm still processing it

Last month I built this automation pipeline for our support tickets that used a multi-step reasoning loop with self-critique. I was proud of it, but one of our senior engineers on a code review in Chicago said 'this looks like it's being smart instead of being useful.' That hit hard. I realized I was adding complexity just so the AI seemed impressive, not because it solved the problem better. I stripped it down to a simple classifier plus a template-based response generator, and our resolution time actually dropped from 4 hours to 1.5. Has anyone else gotten feedback that made you simplify your AI work, even when it felt like you were dumbing it down?
